My work is inspired by both my attraction to the aesthetics of Pop Art and my exposure to the world of design, patterning, and the subtleties of color. While interning at York Wallcoverings,  I was introduced to the process used to create fabric, wallpaper, and borders. It was intriguing to see how a simple image could be repeated and modified to make patterns and how colors could be manipulated to entirely change the look of the completed project. It was during my time at York Wallcoverings that I began producing colored pencil work involving the patterning of various objects, like boxes of chocolate, oranges, eggs, and carrots. I include these recognizable objects in my work in order to make it feel more accessible to the viewer. The viewers relationship and interaction with what I create is an essential ingredient in my work. I explored the concept of the viewers’ role in a work of art while an undergraduate student at Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA.

I graduated from Ursinus College in May of 2010 after completing an honors project in Studio Art, exploring the impact a work’s material has on a viewer. In this body of work, I recreated 10K Rainbow, a colored pencil piece I completed after my internship at York Wallcoverings, in twenty-two different materials. Some of the materials used in this series include stained glass, ceramics, felting and punch embroidery. Many of the craft techniques included in my series were inspired by the strong craft tradition in my hometown: York, PA. As viewers walked through the gallery, I asked them to consider how the materials used impacted their interactions and feelings about each piece. I was interested having the viewer take a moment to consider how they feel about an image done in stained glass as opposed to that same image when it's embroidered. I created some pieces that were very small and required the viewer move closer, while other pieces were large and imposing, blocking the foot-traffic in the gallery. Varying the media used in my series while keeping the images constant allowed me to showcase the importance of material choices and point to how these choices can ultimately change the way a piece is viewed. In the future, I plan to continue exploring how the viewer can interact with my artwork and how my artwork can interact with the viewer.
